Moon Landing Hoax -Is It Possible?
Was one of the most famous moments in world history really a hoax? While most people take it for granted that the Moon landing of 1969 was a very real event, a small but vocal minority insist that it was all a grand scheme to deceive the public.
As the world celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, this issue has inevitably resurfaced. Actually, there are quite a few issues that conspiracy theorists bring up. All have been "debunked" by scientists and published on sites such as National Geographic. Unfortunately, most of the arguments cannot be resolved in a manner that will satisfy everyone. This is because Moon landings (real or fake) do not happen very often, so we cannot easily verify the claims one way or the other.
For example, skeptics point to a clearly defined footprint made by astronaut Buzz Aldrin and claim that it is far too deep and detailed to have been created on a dry surface. The aforementioned National Geographic site counters this by claiming that moondust has a consistency similar to volcanic ash, so that a footprint would indeed be highly defined and visible. Again, how are we going to verify this question without another trip to the Moon?
Another issue that has been brought up are the presence of strange lights in the Moon landing footage, which some suggest were made by studio lights. Similarly, there have been arguments about the way astronauts and objects seem too clearly visible while in shadow --allegedly suggesting, once again, the presence of hidden studio lighting.
I find the Moon Landing Hoax theory interesting, not because I believe in it, but more as a kind of thought experiment. Could an event on such a grand scale be faked and sold to the public? It's hard to say. A 1978 movie, Capricorn One explores virtually the same issue, only they make it a Mars landing hoax. Another film to look at the possibility that the news is really coming from a movie studio is Wag the Dog, about a fake war being fabricated for political purposes.
As for the scientific validity of the hoax claims, those who are so inspired can only look at each claim and thoroughly research the available evidence. The Moon landing hoax theory is, unfortunately, one that is very hard for most of us to either prove or disprove.
